A solo piano arrangement of this Armenian Christmas carol, Easy-Intermediate level, composed by Alexan Mnagian. The title translates to “The Night Descended,” and the lyrics speak of the night of the birth of Christ.
The Armenian liturgy and folk music carry rich, emotive, often haunting melodies. I learned and sang this one often at my school in Lebanon, where I grew up in the 1980s.
This arrangement keeps the original harmonies and chords for the first part, then develops a slightly more playful, light jazzy feel for the second part — a nice fit for a Christmas or sacred-music recital looking for something outside the usual repertoire.
